Time to harvest the Cox's apples before they drop in the gales or get pecked or nicked. They could probably do with a bit longer on the tree as the seeds don't rattle when you shake them.

Whopping windfalls

Whopping windfall apples after recent storms make up for wind damaged sunflowers and a late night tussle with a clump of ten foot jerusalem artichokes which needed tying up.

The Cox's apple tree is in blossom early and unlike in previous years, the weather's good for flying pollinators.

Harvest Supper

Crikey! September again and the accompanying panic and melancholia at the passing of the summer and shortening of the days. Still, plenty to harvest in reward for all the work months ago, when the days were lengthening. Trending (?) this week; sweetcorn, french beans, lettuce and windfall apples.

Cox's Orange Pippin: Probably should have thinned the fruit out and watered more during the hot dry spells. Many of the branches are weighed down amongst the gooseberry bushes which could do with a prune now. Cox's are particularly susceptible to scab, mildew and canker and these ones are also susceptible to being nicked by passers-by.

Back from a six month blog sabbatical and a late cold winter that went on and on. Now, eventually, it's warmed up, the most reluctant seeds have germinated and for the first time in several years, slugs and snails have not been a major problem.
